I'm re-reading Heinlein's Number of the Beast (1980) and the item below caught my attention....Is there a record in Heinlein's works of The Purge? Did it form the basis of any other story he wrote?

"We weren't thinking of that, Hilda. We're trying to apply Clarke's Law."

"I don't recall it. Maybe it was while I was out with mumps."

"Arthur C. Clarke," Pop told her. "Great man -- too bad he was liquidated in The Purge. Clarke defined how to make a great discovery or create a key invention.

Question is about an aspect of a particular work, not the author. Commented Nov 15 at 15:06

No it isn't. It's asking if Heinlein had any works detailing the Purge, not about this specific novel. Commented Nov 15 at 15:08

Closest to a "purge" might be found in "Revolt in 2100" Commented Nov 15 at 15:11

Given that the book is about jumping between alternate realities, I would take it to be a throwaway reference that would resonate with his readers, but not to connect with anything else. Commented Nov 15 at 15:33

This "purge" would have had to have happened during Clarke's lifetime, so Revolt in 2100 seems unlikely. I have not read - or at least finished - Heinlein's late novels, but in his good works, I am unaware of any such Purge. Commented Nov 16 at 14:56
