I'm attempting the scarecrow puzzle in Silent Hill f on Hard difficulty. The first prompt I got was the following:

Hint

Can you even imagine how I feel?

I'll put on my polite smile for now.

Everything I'm finding online says the solution to this puzzle is to find the scarecrow that's smiling. The problem is, both times I've been through this puzzle, I swear there are two smiling scarecrows.

Wrong Scarecrow, looks like they're smiling

Right Scarecrow, looks like they're smiling

The second one ended up being correct in this case.

Is this a bug? Or is there an aspect of the scarecrow puzzle that I'm missing?

According to The Gamer,

The scarecrow we're looking for is the one that is smiling with its own face, but has a mask on the back of their head that is frowning.

...Okay, that's stupid and entirely the opposite of what the hint just said, but that seems like an approximation of the puzzle's intended solution since it involves mimicking emotions. Commented Nov 15 at 14:36
  • The clue says "I'll put on my polite smile FOR NOW" - meaning, "I have a polite smile, which I am currently wearing, and another available expression" Commented Nov 15 at 21:50

@DewiMorgan I mean, taken one step further, the operative phrase would be "I'll put on", which means they should have a sad face worn and a happy mask that has yet to be put on. Commented Nov 15 at 22:00
  • @Grammer Ah, true, I see how that interpretation works now! I guess it depends on how far in the future after we've read it, the "I'll... for now" is talking about. I think because of the "now", I parsed it as "between reading it and finding them", but I agree that reading it as "eventually" works too. Commented Nov 16 at 9:25

You're probably missing a close look.
The 'smile' in your first screenshot is not a real smile if you just check the lips and ignore the make up. That's a rather neutral expression.
In the second one, you can actually see the smile.

The screenshots above enlarged, and the second/'smiling' one rotated 90° to the right:

Scarecrow neutral Scarecrow smiling

Honestly, they both look neutral without the makeup, at least to me. Commented Nov 17 at 16:02
  • @Otakuwu In the 'smiling' one, you can 'clearly' (after a fashion) see the teeth, and they're not fletched. Also the nasolabial crease (yes, I had to look that up; not a doctor) is deeper. I'd say that's a smile. Yes, you have to look closely, but this is a horror game, not your run-of-the-mill 'spot the difference' puzzle. Commented Nov 17 at 16:55
  • I think any explanation which has to involve the phrase "nasolabial crease" is a bit of a stretch. Both of them are smiling. The "for now" is the key, as discussed in the other answer. Commented Nov 18 at 9:10
