How to install node.js and npm on linux?

Question

I am following a tutorial for a course, and in a specific step of it, I am supposed to install node and node.js using these specific instructions.

but i'm confused with the first step. I don't understand how to enter that in the terminal. What is the <<EOL? Can someone explain it or show it as a 1 liner so I can use it. I tried just copy pasting that, but then it fails at a later step for installing npm, and I get issues about having broken packages.

In short to fix that error, run this command sudo apt -f install && sudo apt update && sudo apt install -y nodejs npm — smac89

Just use node version manager (nvm) which is my recommendation.

https://github.com/creationix/nvm

After installing nvm run nvm install 6.9.4 or whatever version you want. Then run nvm alias default 6.9.4

You should get npm with the nodejs installation itself. You don't need to install npm separately. See this: npmjs.com/package/npm-4/tutorial. Try running the last line without doing apt-get install npm

It looks like node may not have installed. Did you try node --version? It should give you a version number if it installed. Also, here is the page for installing node with a package manager.
