Nginx not working with php5

Question

I have nginx installed and decided that php & MySql would be nice to have. I'm running SSL from let's encrypt with the nginx server. I have edited the /etc/nginx/nginx.conf & /etc/nginx/sites-available/default files like many guides for this topic have stated, yet the php files are printed instead of being run. Below are the two config files mentioned.

You forgot about upstream section into your nginx config: see serverfault.com/questions/546349/… — alexander.polomodov

Nginx is webserver, but you should also configure the php interpreter. And configure to work both with each other. — alexander.polomodov

You need to remove:

location ~* { gzip_static on; }

Despite being dubious syntax, it matches any URI and prevents the .php files from being processed by the location ~ \.php$ block.
