I'm having trouble deciphering the following Javascript initialisation statement:

It seems unnecessarily complicated - calling (or setting?) 'nav' 3 times in 2 lines. Can somebody please explain what the point is of flipping it around like this?
var nav = NAMESPACE.nav = {};instead. Or even omit the local variables, but that seems to be for conveniently referring to the namespace later in the code.(var nav = (NAMESPACE.nav = {})). First an empty object is assigned toNAMESPACE.nav. The result of the assignment is the assigned value itself, i.e.{}.navandNAMESPACE.navrefer to the same object then.
