I recently noticed that my inbox indicator has a negative counter:

screenshot of inbox indicator with -1 appearing

Update: I investigated a bit and apparently this was caused by a user who commented something and then removed their comment, all done before I checked my inbox.

As you can see below, I have since got three unread messages, but indicator shows "2" which means there's something missing.

counter miss one message

UPD: steps to reproduce

  1. someone adds comment
  2. you open inbox popup and see that comment
  3. that comment is then removed while your inbox stays open
  4. you then mark that comment as read (by clicking on envelope icon)

after all this done here's what we get:

Already -3 inbox. Notification from SO was deleted

UPD behavior with animation: when "mark as read" counter reset to 0, but after refresh still negative

Personally my inbox looks ok, probably there're some specific steps needed to reproduce it? Commented Apr 8 at 11:41

I think we need a little more information. Is this a one-off glitch; does "Mark all as read" resolve it? What about refreshing? What about the "full inbox"? Commented Apr 8 at 11:55

refreshing not helps Commented Apr 8 at 13:05

@nicael, thanks, seems after "Mark all as read" - all ok. Let's try one more test: add comment and remove it in short time (before i read) Commented Apr 8 at 13:17

@nicael, i noticed error after user delete comment here Methinks it was too fast: send and delete and this is a bit problem with notification Commented Apr 8 at 13:47

@Grundy didn't see the edit; my apologies :) great work, I'm glad we could work together to reproduce it! Commented Apr 8 at 21:01

Just to be clear, in the "steps to reproduce", someone else must add and delete the comments, of course? If possible, when you get the time, could you maybe elaborate a little on the four steps, so it's easier to repro? Commented Apr 8 at 21:03

This just happened again to me after I got a "message" notifying me about the "chat room guidelines" announcement post. I clicked it, I marked it as read; now I'm at -1 unread messages. Commented Nov 10 at 19:14

Same as @Bergi i.sstatic.net/JilyMk2C.png I even got a few more messages before I noticed. So at one point i had this interesting count. I managed to get rid of the -1 count by clicking "Mark all as read" Commented Nov 10 at 19:36

I just got the -1. The latest message is "room culture.." something. Commented Nov 11 at 6:24

I am able to reproduce it Commented Nov 12 at 6:25

I was also able to reproduce this. It happened after I dismissed a comment notification, and then the "Set your room's culture" notification. I'm guessing it's related to the latter. Commented Nov 12 at 19:07
