BREAKING: Republic of Korea and Bahrain join the PPCA 🎉 In a historic step, the Republic of Korea, the world’s 7th largest coal fleet, has joined the PPCA. For the first time today, the country has officially announced its commitment to stop building new unabated coal power plants and phasing out existing unabated coal power plants. 🎉 Out of 61 existing coal power plants, 40 coal power plants are confirmed to phase out by 2040. The phase out date for the remaining 21 coal power plants will be determined based on economic and environmental feasibility after public discussion, and a specific plan is scheduled to be established next year. The Korean government has also pledged to work with other members of the PPCA to advance the coal-to-clean transition globally. The Republic of Korea is the second country in Asia to join the PPCA and will play a key role in supporting the transition away from coal power in the Asia-Pacific region. Another country joining the PPCA today is Bahrain, which has never had any coal power plants and has committed to not build any in the future. The government of Bahrain has also pledged to work with other members of the PPCA to advance the coal-to-clean transition globally. Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/epQm7e9A

¡Sombra!, created through our #PublicArtChallenge, brought together artists, civic leaders, and residents to design shade structures that address extreme urban heat in the City of Phoenix — the hottest city in the U.S. Across the city, artists developed innovative installations using cooling materials, including UV-resistant fabric that lowered air temperatures by nearly 50 degrees. The project demonstrates how public art can drive meaningful climate and community impact. Read more in The Art Newspaper: https://lnkd.in/eziQSjdr

Around the world, 50 city halls — finalists of our 2025 Mayors Challenge — are prototyping their boldest ideas for reimagining a core municipal service: testing, learning, and adapting their plans based on what works. In Fukuoka, Japan, Mayor Soichiro Takashima is showing the way — leading on how local government can rewire delivery to meet the needs of a growing population — the 1 in 11 people living with dementia. It’s a whole-of-city approach that rallies residents, mobilizes partners, and engages those most impacted in pilots so they can shape what comes next. Because when citizens help their mayors try something new — good ideas become great programs, and great programs deliver results.

COP30 Announcement. Global philanthropies commit $300 million to accelerate solutions on climate and health. The Climate and Health Funders Coalition recognises the need to act with urgency. The last decade has been the hottest on record, and the human cost is clear: lives lost to extreme heat, worsening air pollution, and the spread of infectious diseases. The Coalition aims to accelerate solutions to tackle these challenges. The funds will also bolster climate and health data, to strengthen health systems that protect people’s lives and livelihoods. The committed funders currently include: Bloomberg Philanthropies, Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), Gates Foundation, IKEA Foundation, Quadrature Climate Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation, Philanthropy Asia Alliance (by Temasek Trust), and Wellcome. Located between New York City and Boston sits the City of East Providence, Rhode Island. Access to the vital I-95 corridor, which connects the Northeast and major waterways, helped this municipality thrive as a bustling industrial center. However, in 2023, structural failures shut down the Washington Bridge – cutting off a critical link, clogging quiet neighborhoods with traffic, harming air quality where people live, and making it more dangerous for residents to get to where they need to go. Municipal officials had a solution, and they turned to the Local Infrastructure for help. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gdhGmHaM
