On tonight’s game:

(Grand Rapids) is predictable in how they play. The first period, the first 10 minutes again, we didn’t match their intensity. They were playing fast, staying on their check and we had a tough time breaking the puck out. Once that 10 minutes ended, we really needed to get out of that first with really only one goal against because we were really much better in the second and third, kind of a carbon copy of last game. We can make excuses, having younger defencemen in there and so forth. I don’t think they were the issue. I just think we didn’t match their intensity and I didn’t think we were really ready to go at the beginning. You can’t spot a really good team on home ice a 2-0 lead and expect to come back from it all the time. We’ve got to get better at that and it definitely has to be addressed.

On playing a complete 60-minute game:

Teams that win, it isn’t by accident. It’s because they do things right all the time. They’re usually heavy on the forecheck, they’re usually good with their decision making and spend as little time in the D-zone as you possibly can where you’re physical and close in quick so we can go and play in the O-zone. There was a lot of good after the first, but it was a tough way to start especially when you’re playing a good team like that. You’ve got to let (the opponent) know right away in the first period that they’re in for a long game. We’ll have more energy on Friday and we just have to make sure we have a better first period.

On tonight’s game:
(Toronto) carried the play the first 10 minutes. Joe (Woll) made some big saves and then we scored a big goal there in the first period. We got some of that momentum back but then we had a really poor second period and a lot of the penalties took us out of that momentum. They played well but we gave them a lot and unfortunately, we didn’t have enough time in the third period to tie the game.

On Joseph Woll:

I thought he looked really good. He was only going to play 30 minutes so, good on him to stay out there for those PKs and he made some really big saves. We kind of broke down there on a transition play and gave up a two-on-one, basically a two-on-0. It would have been nice for him to get out of there but I thought he played extremely well. He made some big saves when he needed to. He’s a really good goalie and a great guy.
