Aon is empowering smarter decisions and connecting teams with Azure-powered AonGPT

Aon required a secure, scalable tool to enhance collaboration and integrate data across teams, enabling the delivery of timely, high-quality client solutions.

The company built AonGPT, an enterprise-grade AI assistant, on Microsoft Azure, using Foundry Tools, Azure Container Apps, Azure Cosmos DB, and Azure PostgreSQL, to deliver a highly secure, scalable, and governed AI solution.

AonGPT is helping Aon teams deliver faster, smarter client outcomes—used by more than 62,000 colleagues and driving over 6.4 million messages exchanged.

When you work in risk, trust isn’t optional—it’s everything.

For Aon plc, a global professional services firm with specialized capabilities in risk capital and human capital, trust and precision define every decision. Magnus Roe, Global Chief Data and Analytics Officer at Aon, explains that the company is “in the business of managing risk and people issues,” and governance isn’t just a priority—it’s “foundational.”

Before AonGPT, colleagues worked across a variety of systems and workflows to access information and generate insights. While teams were effective in navigating this complexity, the process often required additional time, slowing decisions and making it harder to stay ahead of fast-moving client needs.

Aon saw an opportunity to change that by using generative AI to connect knowledge, automate routine analysis, and empower colleagues to focus on delivering strategic value.

Building AonGPT on Azure

Aon’s engineering and data teams set out to build a secure, enterprise-grade AI platform that could operate across its solution lines. The result was AonGPT, a generative AI assistant developed entirely on Microsoft Azure.

Aon created a scalable platform designed for both speed and governance, using Foundry Tools to orchestrate models and serverless architecture in Azure Container Apps to help ensure performance and reliability. Azure Cosmos DB safeguards enterprise chat data and provides the foundation for highly secure, context-aware multi-turn conversations in AI applications. Aon uses Azure Database for PostgreSQL to manage role-based access control.

Aon also uses Azure Document Intelligence in Foundry Tools to power its policy checker tool, helping teams compare documents and identify changes that previously required up to 40 hours of manual effort.

Real-time accuracy was equally important. Amit Gawali, Head of Engineering at Aon, says the team prioritized grounding AonGPT with the Bing Search feature in Foundry Agent Service. Gawali adds, “Without it, we wouldn’t have launched—the feature had to be there on day one.” This interoperability gave colleagues access to live, verified information while keeping client data better protected within Aon’s environment.

“The Grounding with Bing Search feature in Foundry Agent Service helps ensure that AonGPT is connected to real-world information. This dramatically improves the quality and reliability of the answers we provide across the organization,” says Gawali.

For Aon, responsible innovation means never separating performance from governance. “We’re not sticking a flag in the ground, saying we’ve solved AI governance,” Roe notes. “We know that this will continue to evolve.”

From experimentation to impact

Since its launch, AonGPT has scaled across the organization with remarkable speed. “Over 62,000 users now have access to AonGPT,” reports Gawali. “About 31,000 of which are monthly active users, with more than 6.4 million messages exchanged so far.”

That enthusiasm quickly translated into impact. During the California wildfires, Aon’s catastrophe modeling team partnered with a satellite imagery provider to receive multiple visual updates each day. Using AonGPT, the team wrote code to connect those images to Aon’s proprietary data, producing near real-time insights that helped clients assess damage and plan responses.

That use case hadn’t been part of the original roadmap. “It wasn’t on the list of initial use cases,” Roe recalls, “But it shows how our colleagues very quickly adapted and found new ways to use AonGPT.”

Empowering every colleague

Across Aon, colleagues are using AonGPT to sharpen insights and enhance the quality of client engagement. Chris Gloriod, Enterprise Client Leader at Aon, describes how the tool reshaped his client preparation. “I find AonGPT incredibly helpful if I’m preparing for a meeting. It saves time—it allows me to skim rather than deep dive. But it also works as a co-explorer with me when I’m trying to learn about a business,” he explains.

That collaboration, Gloriod adds, often surfaces new insights. “It comes up with insights and thoughtful questions that I probably wouldn’t have come up with on my own,” he says.

From client teams to technical specialists, AonGPT is now supporting document comparison, translation, and code generation, helping colleagues to shift focus from routine tasks to delivering more strategic, insight-driven value to clients.

Looking ahead

Aon is expanding AonGPT into an AI platform that will support domain-specific agents across HR, finance, and talent acquisition. “We’re going from a monolithic product to a multichannel AI platform,” says Gawali.

The goal is to make intelligent assistants available to every Aon colleague more securely and responsibly. Built on Azure, AonGPT is enabling the firm to innovate with confidence, combining the rigor of risk management with the transformative potential of AI.

What began as an internal experiment has become an enterprise-wide shift in how Aon learns, works, and serves clients. “Microsoft is a trusted collaborator of Aon and has been for years,” says Roe. “We’re not just deploying a tool—we’re building something together that unlocks real value for our colleagues and clients.”

Together, Aon and Microsoft are showing that responsible AI doesn’t just manage uncertainty; it helps the world move through it with greater resilience, confidence, and clarity.
